Twitter (X) Down Again: Thousands Report Outage Amid Data Center Fire

If you’ve opened the X app (formerly Twitter) today and were greeted with the dreaded “Something went wrong. Try reloading.” message, you’re not alone because Twitter is down. For the second day in a row, Elon Musk’s social media platform is experiencing major service disruptions, and users are understandably frustrated.

Reports have flooded in from across the U.S., with over 25,000 users noting issues loading posts, sending DMs, and even logging in. Whether you’re using the desktop version or the mobile app, X is down again.

What Exactly Is Happening With Twitter/X?

The outage began on Thursday, May 22, around 2 PM Eastern, when users first started noticing problems. According to DownDetector, a popular service tracking online platform outages, thousands of reports rolled in within minutes. While some users couldn’t post, others were completely locked out of the platform.

By Friday, May 23, the issue had not been fully resolved, sparking concern and confusion across the community.

Official Response from X

The X Engineering Team finally addressed the situation, confirming that the issue stemmed from a data center outage:

X is aware some of our users are experiencing performance issues on the platform today. We are experiencing a data center outage, and the team is actively working to remediate the issue.

This response came hours after the platform had already begun failing, leading many to question the company’s communication strategy.

What Caused the Data Center Outage?

According to a May 23 report by Wired, the root cause may be more serious than a typical server hiccup. Citing anonymous sources, the article revealed that a fire broke out at a data center in Hillsboro, Oregon, which is leased by X. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, suggesting that the damage could be extensive.

This kind of physical infrastructure failure isn’t common, and it explains why platform recovery has been so slow.

What Users Are Experiencing

Here’s what users have reported over the last 24–48 hours:

  • Timeline not loading
  • Unable to post or engage with content
  • DMs are not being delivered
  • Login issues across devices
  • Random error messages (“Something went wrong”)

And while some functionality has returned, the platform still isn’t fully stable as of this writing.x is down

Is There a Fix or Workaround?

Right now, there’s no user-side fix for this issue. Since the problem is server-related (and potentially due to fire damage), all you can do is wait for X’s infrastructure team to complete repairs and restore service.

Some users have reported temporary relief by switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or using a browser instead of the app, but these are short-lived fixes at best.

What This Means for the Future of X

Ever since Elon Musk acquired Twitter and rebranded it to X, the platform has faced a wave of backend changes, API modifications, and now, major service reliability issues. With infrastructure outages becoming more frequent, users are starting to wonder whether X can maintain the stability expected from a global platform.

While fires and physical disasters can happen to any data center, the slow response and lack of timely updates leave much to be desired.
